What treatments are available?

There are many over the counter and prescription medications available to treat your GERD. The most common and the most effective non-prescription medications are antacids. Antacids work by neutralizing an amount of stomach acid in the stomach, usually proving relief from your symptoms. When GERD becomes a big issue antacids may not be enough to provide you with relief. In this case you may need to talk to your doctor about other possible treatments. Your doctor will usually prescribe you with what is called a Proton Pump Inhibitor or PPI's. PPI's work by stopping the secretion of stomach acid. While taking PPI's some acid is still secreted which is enough to properly digest food.
